A common misconception.
Shotguns would not be very effective against zombies as they require close proximity to the target to be effective. Against normal humans the buckshot will be effective but it will not stop an infect zombie, nor will it stop a shambler. Slugs would be far more effective but still require close range.

True, but when they get close not even something like that AA-12 with take down the number of them you need. You will not kill them all. And with a scatter as tight as that gun's you aren't going to kill any more than you would with an assault rifle or SMG at close range.
People? Yes. Zombies? Good luck, you'll need it.

Then your magazine runs dry and there are still 16,000 zombies in close proximity of you and you get beaten to death or turned... Or if you're immune you just get torn to pieces until you're barely more than splinters of bone and patches of red on the pavement.

The hunting rifle in the game currently looks almost as if it is an M14, or at least, based off of it.

And don't plan on using the area for a few thousand years, at least.

That was with the technology available in the 1940's. The nuclear weapons of today are massively more powerful.
