L4D Questions - Hosting and Joining Public Servers

Hello Everyone,

I have about 8 friends ready to purchase the game and I just wanted to do some research on a few things before we all pull the trigger.

1) Can you host and play L4D on the same pc?
a) If not, within the same home network, can the server be installed on one pc and open to the internet and the client on another pc within the network connect along with clients outside of network?
b) If yes, do you think a machine of the following specs would be able to handle both serving and playing? Q6600 (quad core), 3GB, 8800GS and 32bit Vista. My bandwidth is 2 way cable with a decent up and down. Not sure of the specifics.
c) Does the server exectuble come at a cost or is it free for online availability?

2) At this time, are there a lot of public servers available in the US? If so, is it relatively easy to find a low ping server that 4 friends can join to play cooperatively?

3) Is the XBox 360 version compatible online with the pc version?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

1. Yes.
1.a. N/A
1.b Yes, should be TF2 requirements + some more CPU (AI).
1.c Dedicated server files should be out and free of charge.
2. Plenty of servers and there are lots of friend/ steam group features. Opening the console and typing a command, "openserverbrowser" lets you view the full on browser if you need it.
3. No

From what I have seen, there's always a dedicated server waiting for a group. I live on the West coast.

Although if you look on the Steam forums, there are a number of people complaining about lack of servers with low pings, non-modded, etc. This is most likely due to where they are from, but most of them never say, so it's hard to tell.

If you guys are on the West coast, I invite you to look for my [STARS] servers, that are all hosted in California.
